You have no background in films; you are an M Phil in English literature. How did the transition from literature to movies happen?

I started my research at Chennai University but could not complete it as I went to Houston after marriage. It was my dream to be a novelist, and I have been writing poems and short stories.

Films were alien to me till I became a filmmaker. I have hardly watched films. It all started when my poems were made into songs.

The music of which was composed by M S Viswanathan. How did you get him to score the music?

His son was my husband's friend's friend and he helped us meet him. MSV read the lyrics and was impressed. He told my husband over the phone, 'your wife has talent. Come, we will compose the songs.'

In 10 days, he composed music for 10 songs. I wanted to

release it as a music album but as I kept listening to the songs, the characters started walking out of them. I could see Viswam, Thulasi, Siva and Pattabhi Aachi living in a village. I had to write about them, so I began my script. I was guided by a force. The film that you see now, I have seen a thousand times in my mind. I thank my husband who after reading the script said, 'we must make this a film. I will produce it.'

I felt only I could translate my dream on screen. So, I decided to direct the film. I did it in my own way as I don't know any rules in filmmaking.
