It did not come as a surprise when Devdas swept most of the awards, with Shah Rukh Khan winning the award for best actor, Aishwarya Rai for best actress, and Sanjay Leela Bhansali for best film. As it turned out, none of them was present to accept the awards. Rai sent a videotaped acceptance message. Kiron Kher accepted the awards on their behalf.

Aishwarya beat Karisma Kapoor (Shakti), Preity Zinta (Dil Hai Tumhara), and Rani Mukherji (Saathiya). Khan, on the other hand, beat Vivek Oberoi (Saathiya), Amitabh Bachchan (Kaante), and Ajay Devgan (Raj Kumar Santoshi's The Legend Of Bhagat Singh).
