'He is the only gentleman left in our trade'

Yash Johar

DEV is, perhaps, the only gentleman left in our trade. Truly a lovely human being.

I joined Dev in December 1962, during the making of his bilingual film Guide. The English version was being made then.

Initially, I joined Navketan for three months. I ended up staying for nine years. It was the most glorious period of my life. Never did we share an employee-employer relationship. It was always friends and brothers. Dev wuldn't let me go -- nor did I want to.

I was with him during the making of Jewel Thief, Prem Pujari, Tere Ghar Ke Saamne and Hare Rama Hare Krishna.

It was during Hare Rama that I left Navketan to start my own export business.

TO talk about Dev Anand would take me hours. He is a human dynamo: he energises everyone. You can't keep pace with him, even while walking.

He is a very fine human being. He is unfailingly polite and extremely considerate. I adore him, admire him and, at times, have worshipped his goodness.
