Wine, poetry and lost love! Paro is Devdas's childhood sweetheart. But he is unable to bridge the chasm of wealth that separates them. Paro is married off to someone else. Devdas finds solace in drink. Meets Chandramukhi, who falls in love with him. Eventually, Devdas returns to die at Paro's doorstep.

Sepia
Like computer software, some classics unfold in versions. Saratchandra Chatterjee's novel first comes alive in P C Barua's Devdas. Director Bimal Roy, cinematographer on the thirties version, reworks it very dramatically. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is all set for the third coming.

Uncut
Roy's technically modern Devdas is a tribute to Barua and K L Saigal's first adaptation. It is released to a public that has neither seen the original movie nor read the book. With acting undergoing a sea change, the final movie is well crafted. But audiences remind Roy that times have truly changed and sentimentality is no longer in fashion.
