1939
Middle class morals press a dagger into the lovers's hearts. This film is a supreme tragedy about the forbidden love between a policeman and a prostitute. Moti saves Kesar from a raid on a brothel. Kesar resists rehabilitation, fearing her past will cast a shadow on her love's future. Cinema beyond its time.
Sepia
Aadmi is director V Shantaram's reaction to P C Barua's pessimistic Devdas. He wants to correct the influence it has on the audience. By refusing pity and living with dignity, the film reaffirms Shantaram's faith in an individual's ability to triumph over adversity.
Uncut
The film is shot entirely on the sets. The only outdoors scene has the leading couple stumble on to a filming location where Shantaram spoofs Achut Kanya. After reciting a very Indian dialogue, an Anglo-Indian actress throws off her sari and walks away in the skirt she is wearing beneath!
