Jet Airways: 14 years of flying high!
May 22, 2007
Controversies: It took about two years for Jet Airways to get the necessary clearances from US authorities to fly to the United States. The US State Department gave the go ahead on November 15, 2006.
Jet's plans hit a roadblock when it was about to fly Newark via Brussels in June 2005. Jet Airways Inc. based in Bethsda, Maryland, opposed the application alleging trademark infringement. Jet problems did not end there.
The US authorities also questioned its credentials, as it doubted its ownership structure as well as its alleged links to the underworld.
However, Jet Airways has crossed the hurdles and is the only private airline in India to get permission to fly to the US.
Jet Airways will launch its first direct flight to the US on August 5 with the Boeing 777-300 ER between Mumbai and Newark via Brussels.
This will be followed by four similar direct flights between other cities in the US and Delhi, Bangalore, Ahemdabad and Chennai in a span of nine months.
