Unseating Azim Premji to become India's richest man, he heads one of India's biggest private companies, from petrochemical to life science to retail, he has dabbled his hand in almost half a dozen different sectors and quite successfully too.
Today he has achieved another milestone. He has turned fifty.
How does Mukesh Ambani plan to celebrate his big day?
According to media reports, Mukesh will spend the day with workers at his Jamnagar factory. He is also likely to participate in a cricket match with them.
We take you through the illustrious years of this low profile business tycoon.
A chemical engineer by profession, Mukesh joined Reliance in 1981. Since then there has been no looking back. With a strong belief in himself and the company's business strategy, he set on an entrepreneurial journey to make Reliance India's most valued company.
Today, with a 48 per cent stake in Reliance Industries his wealth is estimated at $20.1 billion as on March 2007. Forbes rated him the world's 14th richest person.
Success has been a hallmark for Mukesh. The zest to work and excel was deeply ingrained in him since childhood. Even while he was pursuing his degree in chemical engineering, he used to work part time in the company.
"In the journey of an entrepreneur, the most important thing is self-belief and the ability to convert that belief into reality," Mukesh said in an interview to MoneyLife.
