SUVs INTO THE FORE: The sports-utility-vehicle segment also witnessed steady growth in 2003 following the entrance of new and exciting models. Major players like Toyota's Qualis, Mahindra and Mahindra's Scorpio and Tata Motors' Safari saw their sales gaining momentum.
Maruti also tried its luck in the segment with its Grand Vitara XL-7.
While General Motors joined the party by launching Chevrolet Forester, Hyundai pitched in with Terracan.
While Ford introduced Endeavour, Honda rolled out CRV in the SUV segment.
Among the new launches, Nissan has plans to unveil its SUV -- X-Trail -- in India in January. The SUV may carry a price tag of around Rs 20 lakh (Rs 2 million).
Indeed, year 2004 seems to be full of promise for the Indian auto sector which is just revving up for big growth.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd launched Scorpio, one of its top SUVs, in Europe in December, 2003.
