One big family under God

Suddenly, the azaan (Muslim call to prayer) comes from the overhead speakers, bringing a halt to much of the on-street action. Groups of young men proceed to the mosque, lost in their own thoughts, saying little to one another. With the natural sunlight growing increasingly faint, the brilliant lighting has given the entire area an otherworldly glow, the masjid its clear focal point.

As devotees solemnly say their prayers inside the masjid, outside, the food preparation becomes frenzied. Dozens of uncooked chicken are being rubbed with various masalas by young boys no older than 14. Despite their relative youth, they knew exactly what they are doing, handling their task with relish and aplomb. They've done this before, surely. The finished products hang nearby, glistening, crispy Tandoori Chicken, row after row, ready to be pounced on by the endless string of customers now forming a line in front of the temporary stall.
