Rajesh Karkera
Narendra makes fascism fashionable

Narendra Kumar provided a much needed lift to the third day of Lakme Fashion Week, with his bold, bizarre menswear show, 'The Rise of Fascism'. Rife with bloodied bandages and neo-nazi motifs, Narendra's offerings were controversial and provoking, and obviously intended to make a statement.

Citing the rise of religious and regional intolerance in India in recent years as inspiration, Kumar seemed to juxtapose notions of democracy and fascism, war and peace, regionalism and national unity. With heavy metal music blaring overhead, intermittently interrupted by Adolf Hitler audio tapes, the show was indeed powerful, leaving Mumbai's well-dressed and well-scented socialites wriggling in their seats in clear discomfort.

But, overall, one can't help but wonder if all the add-ons and drama only served to detract from the show's main purpose: to showcase an interesting menswear collection.

Still, it was some thought-provoking entertainment. And for that, we're grateful.

This military-gray short jacket features a large collars and an interesting metal button up design. Note the bloodied bandages!
