Better wait or settle for N82 instead
June 26, 2008
There is virtually unlimited amount of storage space for contacts and a plethora of options are at your disposal when it comes to sorting and ordering contacts with customisable preset fields, assignable personal ringtones/ videos, etc. Even the Log application on the N78 can track calls, messages and data transfers for a specifiable time period. Signal reception during calls is perfect sans interferences and the QVGA display outputs sharp levels of contrast with crisp text. This works well with the browser, the most intensive and RAM-consuming app, to display web pages with fine prints.
Construction and design-wise, Nokia opted for the tried and tested approach. It is just about the same size as an N82 and an N73, if not thinner. The glossy finish does appear to be scratch-prone and is reminiscent of the N81. Aesthetically speaking, there is not much to rave about. But the biggest gripe with this model is its unforgiving and difficult keypad. Tactile response has gone right out the window leaving your fingers sore. Even backlighting for the keypad is poor.
Current street price for an N78 is approximately Rs 19,900 while the N82 can be bought for a little over Rs 20,000 including taxes. At first glance, an average Joe would not notice the differences between an N78 and an N82. The swanky interface will certainly not go unnoticed. The same can be said for the difficult keypad which will need some getting used to. Nokia may justify the high price with the inclusion of FP2 but they will need to cut prices within the next 3-4 months to boost sales.
N78 pros
Runs on an updated, fast, swanky looking OS with loads of features unlike the N82 which features a simpler OS
A 1200mAh battery powering FP2 gives longer battery life compared to 1050mAh battery pack of the N82
N78 cons
A 3MP camera with VGA recording locked at 15FPS is no comparison for what the N82 offers
Keypad is not as user-friendly as on a N82
N-gage application has compatibility issues unlike on the N82
Weak LED flash compared to the N82 Xenon flash
Launch price competes with an N82
If you are in a hurry to buy a capable 3G smartphone, settle for an N82 or else wait for the price cuts.
