The PlayStation 2 is the highest selling video game console in India, with over three lakh units sold. It seems strange, though, that while the rest of the world is adopting the newer generation of consoles for their gaming needs, in India, Sony is heavily promoting and banking on PlayStation 2 as its flagship PlayStation product. Is Sony adopting the right policy or just shoving the PS2 down our throats because it's cheaper?
Is the PS2 the ideal entry level console for India's growing gaming market? And should you be parting with your hard-earned money for an eight-year-old console nearing the end of its lifecycle?
The answer to these questions depends on who you are. While seasoned gamers may opt for the newer generation of consoles, Sony's extensive research has found what we all already know -- gaming is still in its infancy in India and a vast number of console buyers here are new to gaming.
So Sony sees the PlayStation 2 as the right tool to break non-gaming Indians into the world of gaming. That seems logical since someone new to gaming can be more easily convinced to pay Rs 7,000 for his/ her first console rather than Rs 25,000 on its successor, the PlayStation 3.
