Get organised with the Nokia N72

September 27, 2007
A highly successful phone from Nokia's now ubiquitous N-series, largely due to near-best of everything a smart phone should have coupled with a very competitive price of around Rs 9,800. Its disappointing looks are compensated with its solid feel –- even with a plastic body.

Key features
~ Supports FM Radio, and boasts a good quality 2-megapixel camera with 20X zoom which also allows video recording in 352x288 pixel resolution at 15fps (frames per second).
~ A great feature allows you to send a predefined text message to a caller whose call you have rejected –- a polite way of conveying why you cannot talk at the moment.
~ Allows internet access, but you may need to download a better browser.
~ It has a voice recorder, but has a strange limitation of just one minute.
~ Comes in Pearl Pink and Glass Black colours.

The frills
It has a highly versatile Office menu, select applications being: Quicksheet, Quickword and Quickpoint to open Excel, Word and Powerpoint files but not edit them; Converter to convert different units; To-do, Calculator and Notes as the name suggests -– the Notes application can be synchronised with the PC, useful for transferring large text files to your phone.

The Security application is a Mobile version of the famous F-Secure anti-virus program; The Adobe reader can open PDF files; The HP Info Print is a handy application for printing a part of the phone's data.

The music player has good features like supporting playlists but lacks even the most primitive equaliser. The FM radio can be accessed only if you have the headset plugged in as it serves as an antenna. The phone comes with three preinstalled games (Card Deck, Snakes and Snowboard 3D), but one can download many more.

Some techie stuff
Its screen has a resolution of 176 x 208 pixels, capable of displaying up to 256K colors. Comes with a 128 MB memory card included. The battery is supposed to give you 260 hours stand-by life, or up to 3 hours and 35 minutes while talking. Supports Bluetooth, but lacks an Infrared port, and has USB 2.0 support with a Nokia data cable. It's a tri-band GSM phone but lacks 3G.

What's not good
Its design -– not attractive and shiny in a somewhat cheap way. The lens cover feels loose when you slide it. The display too seems poor compared to other models in its category.

Weight and dimensions
Weighs 124g, with dimensions of 108.8 x 53.3 x 17.5 mm.
