On higher ground

June 25, 2007
While flats are great for most outings, you simply can't show up for a formal event in them, no matter how bad the weather is. While men can opt for formal footwear even in the monsoons, ladies, here's some advice -- unless you have to walk a very short red carpet, don’t even dream of wearing stilettos in the rains! The pencil heel of your shoe will sink into the soft, wet mud, or worse, may cause you to lose your balance on a slippery, pot-holed road.

For those of you who can't do without your heels, however, don't fret. Pick strappy sandals with thick heels (no higher than an inch and a half, or you'll be asking for trouble) -- you'll be able to maintain your balance better than in stilletos.

The best part is, wedges and platform shoes are the latest trend at the moment, so choose a pair with ankle straps and classic wooden or plastic heels to step out in style -- Blay and Voir has a particularly pretty collection of sensible formal footwear for the rains, and you'll find similar ranges at all leading shoe stores across the country.
