Contact lenses can be divided according to their function -- corrective, cosmetic and therapeutic -- and material -- hard and soft.
Corrective contact lenses are designed to improve vision; cosmetic ones change the appearance of the eye.
Therapeutic lenses are often used in the treatment and management of non-refractive disorders of the eye.
Hard lenses are made out of perspex/plexiglas, an uncomfortable, stiff, plastic kind of material. Soft ones are made of PMMA, fashioned out of soft and pliable plastic polymers.
Though most soft contact lenses are lightly tinted to make them easier to handle, the cosmetic ones come in shades of brown, blue, grey, green, hazel and violet. These cost anywhere between Rs 800 and Rs 3,500 depending on the quality of the lenses and can be disposed according to your convenience -- daily, monthly or annually.
