Fluer Mendes, who works in a boutique in the western Mumbai suburb of Borivali, was bored with her looks. She had cut her hair, coloured it and experimented with different kinds of make-up. Yet, she was not happy.
"So, when a friend suggested I try coloured lenses, I was game," says the 24 year old.
She chose violet-coloured Bausch and Lomb lenses.
"Suddenly, everyone was noticing me," she smiles. "The change was so startling that I had customers telling me that I looked different. It was almost as if I had started a trend," she adds.
Since then, she says, "I have experimented with different colours and have never been without them," she adds.
Kamal Vyas, an optician in Pune, says there has been an increase in the demand for coloured lenses in the last two years.
"Earlier, people with defective eye problems bought the lenses. Now, these lenses have become popular with people who don't [have eye problems]," he says.
He says the trend is more popular with girls, though men between 18 and 30 years old are also trying them on. "I even have customers from the fashion or film industry," Vyas adds.
There have been instances where couples have experimented with coloured lenses for their wedding, he says.
