Research
Read up on your destination or talk to people who have been there for more information on cheap, clean places to stay and eat. Do ensure that these places are safe as well. Plan your itinerary in such a way so that you can visit places that are in proximity to each other.

"In case you don't know anyone, strike up a conversation with the hotel manager when booking, and he could fill you up with valuable tips on the place," Doshi adds.
A word of caution: Be careful not to act 'touristy' or else, everyone ranging from the cab drivers to the shop keepers will take you for a ride.
