"My moods are reflected in everything I do," says Bhawna Yadav.

  • Do you like these designs?

  • A final year student of NIFT, Mumbai, she took two months off for LFH and now has four more days left for her term.

She cannot see herself doing anything else but fashion.

Even if it means having 10 days to submit finished garments at her college, and simultaneously having to work at putting out a beachwear collection at LIFW.

"That's what LFH has taught me," she says. "I was just a design school student before. Now, I have learnt a lot. Especially aspects of fashion like wearability, functionality rather than just design."

Bhawna is a National level basketball player. She dropped out three years ago to pursue fashion design. And her natural flair is to design sporty clothes.

LFH also broadened her scope, she says, to include designing kitsch, elegant ensembles, etc. "I have become a lot more adjusting," she says. "And more accepting of people's criticism of my work."

"For example, I designed a hot pink and bright orange dress for Kareena Kapoor [during one of the qualifying rounds at the Lakme Fashion House]. It was elegant, textured, with sequins. She didn't like it. She wanted something shorter.

"Design is so subjective. Kareena is the kind of person that would go for something short. I would wear a kurta and jeans and feel good in it. And that's what I have learned to accept."

"But Kareena does look good in short dresses," she adds.

Bhawna's plans include working with Rajesh Pratap Singh, Muzaffar Ali ("I know he doesn't take assistants, but I will still try") or Aki Narula.

"I know, they are all different designers with different styles. But I like their working ethic, and I appreciate their styles and professionalism.

"Style and creativity is within me. No one can take it away from me," she says. "And I would like to work with them for their professionalism."
