Indrani Dasgupta in Sandhya Srinivasan's funky, multi-coloured short and long dresses.
Sandhya Srinivasan is 24 years old. And, thanks to Lakme Fashion House, she says she knows how to face the camera and is no longer overawed by anything.
"LFH changed all of us," she says. "I am not the same person I was before the show. I have grown a lot in terms of my design sensibilities, and personally as well. "I have become more mature. I like combining fabrics together. Kitsch, especially, is what attracts me most. I have always done kitsch. "You know, Shahzad [Kalim] has never done kitsch before. And he did it for his show at the LIFW, and it rocked. I told him, 'Hey, you finally did kitsch!'" Sandhya's life now is a whirl. There have been offers to design for films. "There was an offer to design for a Farhan Akhtar film, but it fell through because there were some date problems." Others have approached her as well. But she prefers to wait and watch. For now, she would rather go back to Sandy Starkman, the designer she was working with before LFH. "In two years' time, I hope to launch my own label. Else I will be working with a corporate in Bangalore. "Bangalore doesn't really have many good designers, and it is the corporate hub. And my parents live there. So it makes sense. "I might even move to Mumbai if I have some good film offers. Let's see." For now, these are Sandhya's MUSTs this summer: 1. Go for pastels. Not dull pastels, but hues like lemony yellow, lemon green or peach.
2. Big prints are hot now. 3. A lot of surface ornamentation is also in. 4. Skirts. It's like people are so bored of trousers that they have decided to adopt skirts with a vengeance. And it's well-known that you can experiment more with a skirt than a trouser.
