The Sound of Music

Few have managed to escape it. Of these, thousands continue to succumb every year.

This Broadway musical -- and movie -- was actually based on the book The Von Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp. It gave us songs that are now as popular as Happy Birthday - including Do-Re-Mi, Climb every mountain and Edelweiss. With music from Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, the musical opened in 1959. The film (in the picture), which came six years later, won Best Picture of the Year.

And here's something you probably didn't know: The musical's first ever production in Austria was held as late as February 2005, in Vienna.
