Grease
Created by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey -- and based on subcultures of 1950s high school America -- Grease owes a lot of its popularity to the film version, made in 1978 and starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.
The musical opened off-Broadway at the Eden Theatre on February 14, 1972. It was popular with the public almost at once, although critics weren't impressed. The latter were proved wrong, eventually. This latest honour aside, Grease ran for 3,388 performances in four different theatres.
