Urmila Matondkar

She's one of the most experimental actresses I've known. I've shot her in the middle of the street, standing on top of a cab! The magazine wanted a bizarre picture. She was supposed to be on the street with a traffic police cop. But she was mingling in the crowd too much. So I put her on top of a cab. She did not even ask questions. She always gives it her best shot.

The next shoot with her was another outdoor one. We did the makeup and hair at her house at 7 am and then went driving around and shot pictures.

We used to do outdoors a lot because I did not have a studio when I started my career in 1995.

This was done in Rajeev Chudasama's cabin. The idea was to have red on red. So Urmila wore everything red. What we had to work on was her skin tone.

There is a lot of effort in this picture, though one cannot make out by just looking at it. Urmila's makeup took an hour and a half. Lighting took longer, as we had to match the existing office lights to yellow lights, and get the right tone.

Then, Urmila had to stay very still in the picture, to get a sharp picture.
