Gunga Jumna (1961)

Dilip Kumar's Gunga is a mischievous rustic hero who is forced to become an outlaw when the evil zamindar (Anwar Hussain) frames him. By the time his beloved Dhanno (Vyjayanthimala) persuades Gunga to surrender before his brother who is now a policeman, it is too late to turn back. Gunga has to pay for his sins with his and Dhanno's life.

Dilip Kumar's singular presence looms large over Gunga Jumna. Particularly impressive is his fluent, effective use of
the Bhojpuri dialect. Gunga Jumna also features some incredibly romantic scenes between Dilip Kumar and Vyjayanthimala.

Incidentally, Dilip Kumar spent six months trying to get his film cleared by the Censor Board. After the harrowing experience of making and releasing his debut production, he vowed never to produce a film again.
