Mughal-e-Azam (1960)K Asif's Salim, portrayed by Dilip Kumar, was the original angry young man of Hindi cinema. In fact, shades of this character are evident in Ramesh Sippy's Shakti, where Amitabh Bachchan plays the rebel son who takes on the establishment represented by his father. Here, his driving force is the irresistible courtesan Anarkali (Madhubala). Salim defies royal convention and challenges the authority of his father and the Emperor of India Akbar (Prithviraj Kapoor), by expressing his stubborn desire to marry Anarkali. |

Dilip Kumar's understated performance heightened Salim's seething rage towards his father while his subdued expression of love for Anarkali created some of the most sensuous, romantic moments seen on the Hindi screen. |
