When the Justice Party becomes the Dravida Kazhagam, Karunanidhi designs the party's flag -- black, with a red circle. DMK legend claims he drew the circle with his blood! The black is a reminder of the backwardness of those the party wants to liberate, while the circle represents its progressive aspirations.
By now he also edits a Tamil newspaper, Malai Mani. His editorials are much discussed and analysed in the state. One editorial, 'The Pandal is Shaking', dwells on the Congress' failures and has such impact that the Congress loses the next election.
