Personal life
Karunanidhi marries Padmavathy Ammayyar when he is 20, but she dies young. While she is dying, her husband is delivering a speech at a political rally.
He later marries Dayalu Ammal, whose sons Azhagiri and M K Stalin are well-known political figures. Stalin is said to be Karunanidhi's chosen successor. There has been some speculation about his second wife, Rajathi Ammal. Apparently, when the Opposition raises the issue of a woman called Rajathi giving birth to a child and asks Karunanidhi if he is the father, he replies: 'Rajathi en Kanimozhiyin thai (Rajathi is my Kanimozhi's mother)'. Kanimozhi is a Tamil poet today.
