Had to resign just one-and-half-months before he could complete four years as chief minister when Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray began becoming uneasy with his proximity to NCP chief Sharad Pawar. He was also accused non-performance.

Another reason was that Joshi was not getting along well with his deputy and BJP leader Gopinath Munde.

He went on to become a Union minister and speaker of the Lok Sabha, but lost in the recent Lok Sabha election. Is keen on another stint in the chief minister's post but has not found favour with Bal Thackeray.
