Hello and Welcome to the coverage of the first ODI of the three-match series between India and New Zealand at Vadodara's Kotambi Stadium, on Sunday, January 11, 2026.
While India will be looking to assert their supremacy in the 50-over format, the series presents an ideal opportunity for the Kiwis to test their bench strength.
It will be their first meeting in ODIs since the 2025 Champions Trophy final, which India won by four wickets.
India bank on Kohli, Rohit's form
As the Men in Blue gear up for their first game of 2026, all eyes will be on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma.
The senior pros, who have retired from T20Is and Test cricket, have been in good nick in the 50-over format and their form will be pivotal for India's fortunes in the series.
With India's next ODIs scheduled for June -- a three-match series against Afghanistan -- Rohit and Kohli will be keen to go into hibernation on a high.
A major personal milestone beckons for Kohli as he is just 25 runs away from becoming the third player to score 28,000 international runs after Sachin Tendulkar and former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara.
Besides, the maestro needs 42 more runs to topple Sangakkara (28,016 runs) to become the second-highest run-getter across formats.
Gill, Shreyas return
Shubman Gill, who sat out of the majority of the series against South Africa with a neck injury, returns as captain along with his deputy Shreyas Iyer, who has recovered from a spleen injury sustained during the tour Down Under in October.
It is to be seen how Gill responds after being left out of India's T20 World Cup 2026 squad. The series will be a great opportunity for him to regain his form after a string of low scores.
Having amassed 2,818 runs in 58 games, the 26 year old is just 182 runs short of completing 3,000 ODI runs. He has eight hundreds and 15 fifties under his belt and is averaging close to 60.
Shreyas is also on the brink of completing 3,000 runs in ODIs and is just 83 runs short of the landmark. If he manages to reach the milestone during this series, he will become the fastest Indian to 3,000 ODI runs in terms of innings, surpassing Shikhar Dhawan, who achieved the feat in 72 innings.
The two teams have so far played 120 ODIs, with India emerging victorious 62 times. The Black Caps have won 50 times, while one game was tied and seven ended in a no result.
It will be the first time that the new Baroda Cricket Association Stadium in Kotambi will host a men's international. The venue has previously hosted a women's ODI series between India and the West Indies.
