Chasing 265, Australia lost Marsh and Head early before Short and Renshaw put on a good fighting stand to stabilise the innings.
India kept chipping at the wickets removing Short, Renshaw and Carey but youngster Connolly and Mitch Owen played calmly to keep Australia in the hunt and eventually Connolly took Australia to victory with a quick 61.
Arshdeep, Rana and Sundar had two wickets each.
Earlier, put in to bat, India posted a modest 264 for nine despite skipper Rohit Sharma's return to form with a 97-ball 73 (7x4, 2x6).
Shreyas Iyer contributed 61while Adam Zampa got 4 for 60. Xavier Bartlett took 3 for 39 including Virat Kohli for a duck.
