Clinical PBKS beat LSG, 2nd on table

LSG 199-7 (20 Ovs) vs PBKS 236-5 | SCORECARD

A comfortable win for Punjab Kings. The daunting target was always going to test LSG's batting depth, and once Arshdeep removed the top three early, the chase was derailed.

Pant and Miller couldn't steady the ship, continuing their lean run, and it was only thanks to Badoni and Samad that LSG were spared complete embarrassment. Their 81-run stand was brisk and entertaining, but it was never enough to threaten PBKS.

Badoni's knock was the lone bright spot-he continues to shine as LSG's most consistent batter.

On the final ball, Shreyas Iyer drops a sitter at extra cover, but it's all academic now-Punjab Kings win by 37 runs.

They finally break the Dharamsala curse and climb to second on the table, just one point off the top.

A clinical performance that sends a strong statement as they head into the business end of the season.

Refuses a single next ball, then launches another six-dug in short, and dispatched with ease. He follows it up with two runs, then creams a boundary. A fiery over from Badoni, but he's beaten on the last ball by extra bounce.

He drills the next ball straight back at the bowler, and Jansen, with safe hands, takes a sharp catch. No hundred for Prabhsimran

PBKS 220-5 (19 Ovs) vs LSG | SCORECARD

Avesh Khan takes the ball for the 18th over, but it turns into a nightmare for Lucknow. Shashank gets things going with a boundary off a short, wide delivery, and then gets lucky as an edge races away for four more. He follows it up with a single to rotate strike. Then it's the Prabhsimran show! The in-form batter unleashes a massive six, punishes a missed yorker with a crisp boundary, and then deposits another delivery deep into the stands to end the over with a flourish. Rathi takes charge of the 19th over and keeps things relatively tight for Lucknow. He starts with a wide but follows it with a string of disciplined deliveries. Shashank can only manage a single before a rare dot ball slows the momentum. Prabhsimran adds just one more before his sensational innings comes to an end-caught by Pooran at long-on for a brilliant 91 off 48 balls. No century, but a match-shaping knock nonetheless. Rathi celebrates with his trademark notebook celebration. Stoinis walks in and wastes no time, getting off the mark with a boundary.

Shashank Singh is the new man in and gets going right away with a single to midwicket. Prince Yadav tests Prabhsimran with a slower bouncer outside off, but the in-form batter reads it early and launches it high over Pooran-who gave it a valiant chase but couldn't stop it from clearing the ropes.

Two more singles round off the over, which yields 10 runs and the key wicket of Wadhera. After 16 overs, Punjab Kings are 171/4.

Mayank Yadav returns for his final over, hoping to make amends after an expensive outing. Shashank clips one around the corner, and Avesh Khan fumbles at fine leg to concede extra runs. A mistimed heave from Shashank goes high but lands safely in no man's land-he survives and scampers two. Then, BOOM! Shashank sends one soaring clean out of the stadium, forcing a ball change. He follows it up with more clever placement to collect a couple of runs and ends the over with a single.

A much-needed boost for Punjab-15 runs off the 17th, taking them to 186/4.

Shreyas Iyer changed his bat as Prince Yadav came on to bowl his second over. He wasted no time, smashing a huge six off the first ball! He then backed it up with a couple of singles. Prince tried an attempted yorker, but it ended up as a slot ball, which Shreyas effortlessly hit for another boundary. Shreyas then hung back and jabbed it towards backward point, but the fielder prevented any runs. A juicy full toss from Prince was sent down the off stump, but Shreyas missed out on it. However, he managed to collect a single to finish the over.

Punjab Kings added 13 runs to their total in that over, bringing the score to 122/2 after 12 overs.

A slower ball from Mayank Yadav was cleverly played by Prabhsimran, who ran it down to deep third. This shot brought up his seventh IPL half-century, and his third consecutive fifty of the season-coming off just 30 balls! It's been his best season so far, and he's certainly repaying the faith PBKS management has shown in him.

A wide was called, and Prabhsimran finished the over with a single. Punjab Kings managed 9 runs from the over and sit at 109/2 after 11 overs.

Akash ended with tidy figures, but 10 runs came off his final over.

After 8 overs, Punjab are well-placed at 85 for 2.

Prince Yadav was introduced into the attack, and Prabhsimran Singh looked to capitalise right away. He started by guiding one to point, then cashed in on a short ball outside off to send it racing to the boundary. A productive 10-run over for Punjab Kings, who move to 95/2 after 9 overs.

Avesh Khan returned to the attack and managed to tighten things up with a tidy over. Shreyas Iyer picked up a quick single to backward point, while Prabhsimran continued to look for gaps but couldnt find the middle of the bat consistently. A wide was called for height, and a couple of sharp singles followed. Despite the running between the wickets, LSGs fielding kept things under control.

Akash Singh continued his impressive spell with a dramatic over. Josh Inglis began in style, launching a massive six into the stands, but couldn't sustain the momentum.

After a swing and a miss, he attempted another big shot-this time mistiming it. David Miller, stationed at deep mid-wicket, judged it perfectly, timing his leap to pluck the ball inches from the boundary while keeping his balance. A superb catch sent Inglis back to the pavilion after an entertaining 30 off just 14 deliveries.

Akash picked up his second wicket in three overs, leaving Punjab Kings at a crucial juncture with their second breakthrough.

Shreyas Iyer got going with a crisp boundary to get off the mark, followed by a quick single.

Welcome to the updates of the first IPL match today, between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.

Riding high on their new-found confidence, defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders will be hoping to finally get it right at home and keep their play-off hopes alive when they take on a struggling Rajasthan Royals in their IPL match in Kolkata on Sunday.

With four league matches remaining, KKR's equation is straightforward -- win all four and reach 17 points, a total that should secure a spot in the top-four without relying on the other results.

The challenge, though simple on paper, is steep in reality.

The final leg of their campaign includes two home matches -- against Rajasthan Royals on Sunday and Chennai Super Kings on Wednesday -- followed by two away fixtures, against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10 and an in-form Royal Challengers Bengaluru (May 17).

While SRH have lost steam, RCB are charging up the table, making that final clash in Bengaluru potentially a high-stakes encounter.

But that's still far away.

For now, the Knights must stay focused on what's immediately in front -- the two back-to-back games at Eden Gardens, starting with the Royals.

Interestingly, both RR and CSK are among the most inconsistent sides this season and were the first to be eliminated.

CSK was the first team to crash out of the play-off race, and RR followed soon after, officially eliminated following their 100-run loss to Mumbai Indians in Jaipur on Thursday.

That, however, makes them dangerous opponents. With nothing to lose, both CSK and RR can spoil KKR's party.

KKR's bigger worry though is their poor run at home.

Eden Gardens, which once used to be their fortress, has yielded just one win from five matches this season -- the latest a rain-affected washout against Punjab Kings.

Their spinners have struggled to adjust to the grip and variable bounce, something the rival teams have exploited far more effectively.

Batting, too, has been underwhelming which has been a far cry from the explosive unit that powered them to the title in 2024.

Rinku Singh, the finisher who grabbed headlines last season, has struggled to make an impact with just 169 runs from eight innings.

Quinton de Kock, roped in to fill Phil Salt's gap at the top, has lacked consistency with 143 runs from seven innings at a strike rate of 137.50.

But the biggest letdown has been their costliest buy of the season, Venkatesh Iyer, who has been re-signed for Rs 23.75 crore and made vice-captain.

The pressure seems to have taken a toll.

Venkatesh has scored only 142 runs in 10 games and just 28 from his last three innings -- a sharp decline from his 370-run tally in 2024, at a strike rate of over 158.

Captain Ajinkya Rahane, KKR's most reliable batter this season, is nursing a hand injury he sustained while fielding.

"I'm fine. I'm trying my best and hopefully I'll play the match on Sunday," he said.

The one big positive for KKR was their morale-boosting 14-run win over Delhi Capitals that ended a three-match winless run.

Sunil Narine was the architect of the win -- a 16-ball 27 with the bat, a match-winning 3/29 with the ball and a brilliant direct-hit run-out that sent KL Rahul packing.

The Trinidadian's all-round brilliance provided the spark KKR badly needed, and his experience will again be the key as they look to reignite their campaign.

For Rajasthan Royals, the tournament has slipped out of control.

With just one win in their last seven games, the flaws in their auction strategy have been laid bare.

A lack of depth in batting and bowling, combined with injuries, has led to their early exit.

The 14-year-old sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi's stunning 35-ball century was a rare moment of magic, but the Royals cannot rely on such individual brilliance every time.

The absence of Jos Buttler, who moved to Gujarat Titans, and captain Sanju Samson, who has missed most of the season due to injury, has left their batting looking thin.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has carried the top order, but the middle-order trio of Shimron Hetmyer, Dhruv Jurel and Nitish Rana has underperformed.

Jurel has one fifty from 10 innings and 249 runs to show, while Hetmyer has scored 187 runs at an average of 20.77.

Rana, who returns to face his former team, has failed to find rhythm and will be under scrutiny against the side he captained with distinction in 2023.

The bowling hasn't fared any better.

Without Yuzvendra Chahal -- now doing wonders for Punjab Kings, including picking up a second hat-trick -- they may lack the penetration, especially on slower tracks like Eden.

Wanindu Hasaranga missed the last game with a niggle and it remains to be seen if he's back.

Jofra Archer has taken 10 wickets in 11 games but at an expensive average of 40.10. Maheesh Theekshana, too, has failed to deliver.
