John Ernest Emburey is somewhat a surprising candidate approached by the Board of Control for Cricket in India to make a presentation on Saturday before a panel of former Indian cricketers, who will select the new coach of Team India.
Like Greg Chappell, he is more famous as a cricketer than as coach even though he has had many coaching assignments during and after his playing days.
Emburey, who holds an Advanced Cricket Coaching Certificate, had a six-year coaching stint with Middlesex. But it wasn't a rewarding one. Middlesex, which prides itself on having a rich tradition of great cricketers, suffered its worst humiliation when it was relegated from the top drawer in the English County Championship last year.
Like Chappell, again, Emburey also tends to be a bit temperamental at times. One doesn't need to state categorically here whether this trait will be the boon or the bane for him if he wins favour of the BCCI panel to coach what is a team of stars and superstars enjoying mind-boggling following. The Aussie had problems dealing with some of the Indian players and the same fate could befall the Englishman.
