Australia v New Zealand, 3rd ODI
Matthew Hayden's record-breaking hundred went in vain as New Zealand beat Australia by one wicket in the third and final ODI in Hamilton on Tuesday and won the series 3-0.
Hayden overcame a foot injury to post the highest individual score by an Australian in ODIs.
The left-handed opener smacked an unbeaten 181 from 166 balls to help his team amass an imposing total of 346 for five at Seddon Park.
Hayden, who already holds the Australian record for the highest Test score (380), broke the previous one-day record of 173, set by Mark Waugh against the West Indies in Melbourne six years ago.
His innings featured 11 fours and 10 sixes and was the eighth highest score in history, just 13 short of Saeed Anwar's world record of 194 for Pakistan against India in 1997.
Hayden's 10 sixes were a record for an Australian batsman
in a one-day match, surpassing Ricky Ponting's nine, and there
were 33 sixes in the match, also a record in limited-overs
internationals.
