Tendulkar's top ten
136 vs Pakistan in Chennai, 1999
It was almost cruel that a grand innings like this couldn't take India to victory.
Tendulkar hit 136 as India, chasing a victory target of 271, recovered from a hopeless 82-5 to put up a brave fight and to score 254-6 before losing their last four wickets for as many runs.
For seven hours Tendulkar combined caution with aggression to take India within 17 runs of victory. He was suffering from back pain and looked tired after the energy-draining effort. While trying to finish off the match in a hurry, he hit one reckless shot and the Indian innings came down tumbling.
But the Chennai Test is remembered as much for the standing ovation the crowds gave to the Pakistani team as for the superlative innings by their star player.
