Mohali - 1st Test | Bangalore - 3rd Test
Ahmedabad is indeed a city of vehicles and smoke and heat; however, the
Motera, with its capacity of about 40,000, is far away from the city, and
its pollution, in a greener belt. The ground, built in 1983, has played host
to some world records; Sunil Gavaskar edging out Geoff Boycott's Test
batting record of 8,114 runs, Gavaskar scoring his 10,000 Test run and Kapil
Dev breaking Sir Richard Hadlee's Test bowling record of 431 wickets.
Predicting the nature of the pitch at Motera is as difficult. It could be a
brown dustbowl, or a seaming track, or it could be a sleeping beauty. In the
Test against South Africa in 1996, medium-pacer Javagal Srinath bowled India
to an incredible win, getting six for 21 even though South Africa needed
just a little over 100 runs to win in the last innings. When New Zealand
played herein 1999, Sachin Tendulkar scored his maiden double century in
Tests but India refused to give the visitors a follow-on because 'the pitch
was getting better and better on the fourth and fifth days.' The Indians
themselves thought they couldn't get the Kiwis out in their second innings.
Mohandas Menon provides some statistical information on those matches.
