Intel announces the 82558Intel Corporation has announced the 82558, the industry's first single-chip fast Ethernet solution for networking at speeds of 10 or 100 Mbps. The silicon device, available in sample quantities, is expected to greatly enhance LAN-on-motherboard designs by integrating advanced networking and power management capabilities. The Intel 82558 provides networking connectivity without a network interface card. This single-chip integrates four chips into one: A dual mode
The Intel 82558 controller extends the corporate PC chip-set to support high-performance fast Ethernet connectivity and three key capabilities required by Intel's 'Wired for Management' (WFM), Baseline and NetPC specifications for remotely managing PCs via the LAN - Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) compliant, Wake-On-LAN support and Remote Boot Agent. The Intel 82555, also announced, is the first single-chip 100 Base-TX physical layer device incorporating line equalisation for switches and hubs. The device offers digitally-controlled adaptive equalisation and transmission for superior noise immunity and very low emissions. In addition, the physical layer device meets the IEEE specifications for repeater operation and has been tested at both the system and silicon level for performance and quality. The Intel 82558 succeeds the Intel 82557 fast Ethernet media access controller, which also supports the WFM Baseline requirements and which is already used by leading PC OEMs. With each Intel 82558, OEMs will receive a royalty-free licence to the LANDesk Service Agent, which meets the pre-boot capability requirement in the Intel WFM Baseline specification and the reference specification for a NetPC. The Intel 82558 is priced at $18.70 in quantities of 1,000. Other new products announced by Intel's networking division include the industry's first single-chip fast Ethernet adapter which enhances network communications through PCs about 30 per cent faster than with other adapters. The two new products, the EtherExpress PRO/100+ and a management-enabled adapter, represent Intel's third-generation of fast Ethernet adapters and are based on Intel's 82558 chip. The EtherExpress PRO/100+ adapter is available immediately at $84 each in 80-unit packs. The adapter is also available in single, 5- and 20-unit packs. The management-enabled adapter will be available to PC manufacturers beginning in the fourth quarter of 1997. It will be available through Intel's distributors and resellers as soon as there are general business PCs configured to support these advanced management capabilities. |
