January 28, 2014 22:53 IST

Veteran drag-flicker Sandeep Singh scored twice as Jaypee Punjab Warriors drubbed debutants Kalinga Lancers 7-3 in a high-scoring Hockey India League match in Bhubaneshwar.

Sandeep scored in the 28th and 40th minutes from the penalty corners after Dharamvir Singh (5th) and Lucas Martin Rey (22nd) had given the Punjab side a flying start in the match.

Affan Yousaf and Simon Orchard then struck in quick succession in the 30th and 32nd minutes as JPW went 5-0 ahead at the breather as the hapless home side, playing their debut HIL match, were completely outplayed by the visiting team.

Kalinga Lancers, under India head coach Terry Walsh, recovered some lost ground in the second session, scoring three goals, through Argentine Gonzalo Pelliat (37th and 45th) and Mandeep Antil (58th).

Star Australian forward and JPW captain Jamie Dwyer completed the tally for the Punjab side with a 49th minute goal.

The Punjab side are now on top of the league table with 11 points from two wins and loss.

Kalinga play Delhi Waveriders on January 30 in their first away match while JPW take on the Delhi side in the Punjab side's second away match this year.
