A 26-year-old Manipuri woman was allegedly assaulted by a man in suburban Santacruz, in Mumbai following which a first information report has been registered against him, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place on the evening of February 27, according to the victim’s family.

The accused, who has been identified but his name is yet to be disclosed by the police, allegedly spat on the girl and when she protested, he assaulted her, the victim’s sister alleged.

The man hit her on the lower abdomen. He then grabbed her hair and dragged her on the street for a few metres, she said, adding that no one came to her sister’s rescue.

She further alleged that when they approached the police that day after the incident, the personnel just registered a non-cognisable offence and not an FIR.

However, a senior police official on Thursday said that initially they did not have all details about the incident.

The FIR was registered on Wednesday night by Vakola police after investigation, he said.

“The accused will be arrested soon. We will look into all the allegations made by the victim,” the officer said.

The accused has been booked under Indian Penal Code Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (voluntary causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intention to provoke breach of peace).

The matter is being probed further, he added.
