A powerful car bomb exploded outside a cafe in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Dagestan killing at least four people and injuring six others, days after a suicide attack at Moscow's international airport claimed 35 lives.

The car bomb attack took place late on Wednesday night outside the cafe in the city of Khasavyurt, Ria Novosti reported, quoting police. It said four people were killed in the explosion and six others injured.

A spokesman of a local hospital was quoted as saying that three dead and seven injured were brought to the hospital soon after the blast and "one of the injured later died during surgery."

It is the second car bomb explosion in Khasavyurt in the past two weeks. On January 14, a similar attack on another cafe in the city killed four people and injured five others. Russia is fighting an Islamist insurgency in the Caucasus, where deadly attacks on government and police have been taking place frequently.

The car bomb explosion followed Monday's suicide attack at Moscow's Domodedovo airport that killed 35 people and injured over 180 others. Some media reports said the airport bombing may have been planned by militants from the Northern Caucasus region.

Monday's suicide attack was Moscow's second terror strike in less than a year. In March last year, two woman suicide bombers attacked the Moscow metro killing 40 people and injuring over 100 others.
