Two highly anticipated films are set to hit the screens this weekend.
One is popular actor Jyothika's comeback film, 36 Vayadhinile.
The other is National Award-winning director S P Jananathan's Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai.
Venkat Prabhu's Masss, starring Suriya, was also in the fray, but the producers decided to back out. The film will be released later this month after the IPL finals.
36 Vayadhinile is in the news for being Jyothika's comeback film, while S P Jananathan is known for his refreshing narrative style.
Here’s why expectations are high for both these films.
36 Vayadhinile
Jyothika’s last film was eight years go. After her marriage to actor Suriya, in 2006, Jyothika took a long break.
She is making a comeback with the family drama 36 Vayadhinile.
The film is a remake of the Malayalam blockbuster How Old Are You directed by Rosshan Andrrews, who also directed the Tamil version.
Incidentally, the film was the comeback vehicle of the popular Malayalam actress Manju Warrier, after a 14-year break.
Rahman plays Jyothika's husband in the film and is supported by Abhirami, Nassar, Delhi Ganesh and M S Bhaskar.
The producer is Suriya under his production studio 2D Entertainment. The music is by Santhosh Narayanan.
In 2007, just before she quit films to focus on her family, Jyothika was at the peak of her career.
She won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress for her brilliant performance as a speech and hearing impaired woman in Mozhi.
She seems to have chosen the perfect woman-centric script for her comeback, but it remains to be seen if she can recreate the old magic.
Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai
Two of the hottest and happening stars of Tamil cinema, Arya and Vijay Sethupathi, have teamed up for the action thriller Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai (PEP).
It is directed by S P Jananathan (E, Peranmai and the National Award-winning Iyarkai).
The film also features Karthika Nair and Shaam in significant roles.
It is jointly produced by UTV Motion Pictures and S P Jananathan's production house Binary Pictures.
The combination of Arya - who is basking in the success of Arrambam and Meagamaan - the hugely talented Vijay Sethupathi, and director Jananathan, augurs well for PEP.
The film is said to be about the arbitrary nature of capital punishment.
