Haryana tops the list of states that have witnessed maximum number of public-private-partnership (PPP) projects in the area of urban development, with a share of 85 per cent worth Rs 66,800 crore as on August 2012, a study has said.

Haryana accounts for maximum share of over 85 per cent in the total number of PPP projects which are under construction in the urban development sector as of August 2012, Assocham said in a study.

"Of the total 81 urban development projects worth over Rs 78,000 crore which are under implementation, Haryana has 12 projects worth over Rs 66,800 crore," the study said.

The urban development segment includes housing, public transportation, water supply and sanitation, it added.

Andhra Pradesh ranks second as it bagged projects of Rs 2,700 crore followed by Madhya Pradesh Rs 2,650 crore, Rajasthan Rs 1,400 crore and West Bengal Rs 1,200 crore.

"Promotion and facilitation of urban centres through inclusive and sustainable ways is crucial considering that urbanisation is the engine of India's economic growth," Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.

There is a need for the administration to step up its performance on delivering basic urban services, improve the governance systems, planning, funding policies, institutions, bolster capacity and capability, he added.

The study added that of the total 881 PPP projects worth over Rs 5.4 lakh crore in various sectors such as education, health care and urban development, 181 projects worth over Rs 99,300 crore are under different stages of implementation.
