2008: Top five Malayalam films so far

Bad to worse -- that's how the journey of Malayalam films has been so far during the first half of the year. And it doesn't look like the situation is going to change either.

With virtually not many filmmakers daring to experiment, the industry is heavily depending on the ageing superstars to work wonders at the box office. And of late, even their ability to create magic at the cash registers seems to be waning.

So it is with a great deal of soul-searching that we round up five of the best so far this year.

Annan Thampi
Director: Anwar Rasheed
Cast: Mammootty (in a double role), Lakshmi Rai and Gopika

The lethal combination of Mammootty and Anwar Rasheed had churned out the bumper hit Rajamanikyam, so it was not surprising that the hit-duo repeated their success with Annan Thampi.

Another thing that worked in the film's favour was the absence of other good films at the time of release, because if there had been even slight competition, this film with a wafer-thin storyline which reminds one of the seventies' Tamil blockbusters, would have had quite another ending.
