Luciano Pavarotti: His music won't fade ever

January 08, 2008

In 1990, a balding, plump man associated with the genre of Western classical music rocked the world. For the theme song of the 1990 FIFA World Cup in Italy, as the world watched, his voice soared in a rendition of Giacomo Puccini's aria from the opera Turandot. Within weeks, people world over began recognising the man behind Nessun Dorma. Luciano Pavarotti, former Italian tenor became, simply, Pavarotti -- the star.

Born on October 12, 1935, Pavarotti's beginnings were humble. At 19, his lessons began. Knowing his family's financial constraints, his teacher, Arrigo Pola, took no fee. His story then followed a trajectory common among struggling musicians everywhere -- hard work, unstable jobs, few concerts, health problems, and eventually considering giving up.

But in 1966, when the tenor whose understudy he was fell ill, Pavarotti stepped in. By 1972, he was driving crowds into frenzy with his effortless highs. On one night, he actually received a record 17 curtain calls!

Much success followed, as did platinum discs, Grammy awards and recognition from all quarters.

In 1998, Pavarotti was given the Grammy Legend Award, awarded just 15 times since its first presentation in 1990. He also made it to the Guinness book of world records twice: For receiving the most curtain calls, and for the best-selling classical album (In Concert by The Three Tenors).

Almost as much as his music, Pavarotti will be remembered for his efforts to raise money for refugees worldwide - more than $1.5 million alone, more than any individual. He passed away on September 6, 2007.
