A genius to guide Citigroup

December 26, 2007

Vikram S Pandit was appointed chief executive officer of Citigroup, the world's largest financial services organisation, on December 11.

Pandit, an affable 50-year-old financial whiz who was born in Nagpur, spent much of his career at Morgan Stanley before shifting to Citi about six months ago and quickly taking charge of investment banking. His rise to the top of the sprawling, troubled, and, some say, unmanageable behemoth has been meteoric.

A cerebral strategist with a degree in electrical engineering, he is said to be one of the best minds in the business.

Pandit said his priorities would be to simplify the company's organisational structure and 'aligning our businesses and resources with appropriate goals and economic realities.'
