Tulsi Tanti, chairman, Suzlon Energy, has a net worth of $5.9 billion.
A commerce graduate with a diploma in mechanical engineering, Tanti, 48, hails from Gujarat and is based in Pune.
When his textiles business was badly hit due to infrastructure problems, he discovered a new opportunity in wind energy.
In 1990, Tanti invested in two windmills. In 1995, he formed Suzlon Energy and gradually quit textiles.
Suzlon Energy is today the sixth largest wind energy company in the world and the largest in Asia. It is currently building what will be among the world's largest wind parks of its kind with a 1,000 mw capacity.
Tanti believes India urgently needs power to drive its economic growth, and green power is the best opportunity. Suzlon Energy has reported annual revenues of $850 million. He has bigger plans and is competing with global companies. In March, Suzlon Energy acquired Belgium's Hansen Transmissions for Rs 2,511 crore.
