It's rare to see a high school football film being acclaimed as being among the year's finest, but Friday Night Lights is just that. Based on the book by Buzz Bissinger, it tells the story of the 1988 season of the Odessa Permian Panthers.

The movie is an exploration of the fact that the Panthers, year after year, carry forth the aspirations and dreams of Odessa on their padded shoulders. Their meetings with the rival school are akin to a major war, and this makes for a thrilling movie.

Billy Bob Thornton is commanding as he plays legendary Odessa coach Gary Gaines.
