Collateral

Cast: Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo

Director: Michael Mann

Written by: Stuart Beattie

The film kicks off with a devilishly interesting premise: a cab driver picking up an assassin who decides the unlucky taxi-man will chauffeur him around from hit to hit. Cruise stars as the silver-haired, icecold-blooded killer, Vincent, and Jamie Foxx comes into his own in the role of the cabbie.

It's a great display of stylism in film, with the plot essentially sticking to the third act throughout the duration. The lighting and editing is interesting, and the pace varies as the movie attempts to gain depth.

Mann, who directed The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider and Ali in recent years, returns to his roots in the thriller genre -- the director made arguably the best of the Hannibal Lector movies, Manhunter, starring CSI's William Petersen in the FBI agent's role. The 2002 remake, Red Dragon, starring Ed Norton and Anthony Hopkins, was no comparision.
