Bangladesh shock Pakistan with 62-run victory

Rank underdogs Bangladesh pulled off the most stunning upset of the 1999 World Cup today with a 62-run win over former champions Pakistan at Northampton.

The result came amid scenes of chaos, with thousands of Bangladeshi supporters storming the pitch waving flags and embracing players even while the third umpire was adjudicating on a run-out for the last wicket.

Players were herded from the field by security guards before the ground announcer revealed the decision.

After notching up its highest ever World Cup total of 223 for six, Bangladesh's new ball bowlers Khaled Mahmud and Shafiuddin Ahmed tore through the Pakistani top order to restrict the 1992 champions to 42 for five in the 13th over.

After a middle-order fightback led by skipper Wasim Akram, Pakistan were finally all out for 161 in 44.3 overs.

Pakistan had already qualified for the Super Six, but the defeat will be a psychological blow to the team, which hadn't lost a single game in the tournament going into Monday's match.

In 35 one-day internationals, Bangladesh had previously defeated only fellow ICC qualifiers Kenya and Scotland.
