Statistical Highlights 29th match: New Zealand v Scotland at Edinburgh on 31-5-1999

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1471st in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 187th in World Cup history.

This match was New Zealand's 328th and Scotland's 5th in LOIs.

This match was New Zealand's 40th and Scotland's 5th in WC.

The Grange Cricket Club at Edinburgh in Scotland was hosting its second LOI match. It had hosted the Scotland-Bangladesh WC match on 24-5-1999.

Matthew Hart was making a come-back to the New Zealand side after missing 56 matches. He last appeared against Pakistan at Karachi on 8-12-1996.

Allott's three wickets for 15 runs makes him the leading wicket-taker in this WC so far - with 15 wickets. South African Lance Klusener has 13 wickets.

Allott is now just three wickets short of the WC record of 18 wickets jointly held by Indian Roger Binny in 1983; Australian Craig McDermott in 1987 and Pakistani Wasim Akram in 1992.

The partnership of 54 between Ian Stanger and Gavin Hamilton was Scotland's best for the fourth wicket. The previous best was the 35 between Mike Smith and George Salmond against Australia at Worcester on 16-5-1999.

The partnership of 11 runs between Alec Davies and Nick Dyer was Scotland's best for the tenth wicket. The previous best was the 7 runs between Hamilton and Nick Dyer against Pakistan at Chester-le-Street on 20-5-1999.

Chris Harris has now become the third highest wicket taker for New Zealand in LOIs. Now only Richard Hadlee (158 wickets in 115 matches) and Ewan Chatfield (140 in 114) have taken more wickets than Harris. He was appearing in his 132nd match.

Harris' figures of 3.1-0-7-4 was one of the most outstanding bowling figures for a bowler who has taken four or more wickets in a LOI match . Only West Indians Courtney Walsh: 4.3-3-1-5, against Sri Lanka at Sharjah on 3-12-1986 and Phil Simmons: 10-8-3-4, against Pakistan at Sydney on 17-12-1992, have better figures Harris.

Harris' figures are however the best by a bowler in the WC bettering the 10-5-8-4 spell by Englishman Chris Old against Canada at Manchester in 1979.

Harris also becomes the first bowler to take four wickets in a completed spell in least number of balls - i.e. in just 19 balls.

His figures were the second best figures by a Kiwi bowler in the WC. Richard Hadlee's 5-25 against Sri Lanka at Bristol in the 1983 WC remains the best.

It was also the best bowling figures against Scotland. The previous best was 3-7 by West Indian Courtney Walsh at Leicester on 27-5-1999.

The partnership of 62 runs between Craig McMillan and Roger Twose was the best against Scotland by any team for the third wicket. The previous best was the unbeaten 48 between West Indians S Chanderpaul and Brian Lara at Leicester on 27-5-1999.

Geoff Allott won his first Man of the match award of his career in his 18th match.

New Zealand becomes the last team to qualify to the Super Six.
