Statistical Highlights 18th match: Scotland v Bangladesh at Edinburgh, 24-5-1999

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1460th in Limited over international (LOI) history.

This match was the 176th in World Cup history.

This match was Bangladesh's 33rd and Scotland's third in LOIs.

This match was the third match for both the teams in the WC.

The teams have not met before although Bangladesh beat Scotland in the semi-final of the ICC trophy in April, 1997 at Kuala Lumpur. Scotland had lost the match by 45 runs.

The Grange Cricket Club at Raeburn Place at Edinburgh in Scotland became the 116th city and 130th ground to host a LOI match. Scotland also became the 16th country to host a LOI match (i.e. if we take the eight Caribbean countries as one). Incidentally, the Grange Cricket Club has been in existence for 126 years.

Faruk Ahmed who was playing in his sixth LOI match for Bangladesh was making a "come-back" to the team after a gap of nine years, four months and 24 days!!! He last appeared at Calcutta in the Asia Cup tournament against Sri Lanka on 31-12-1990. Only England's Wayne Larkins took a longer time (9 yrs and 267 days) when he made a 'LOI come-back' in October 1989n the Nehru Cup at Delhi.

The 69 run partnerhip between Minhajul Abedin and Naim-ur Rahman was Bangladesh's best for the sixth wicket. The pair surpassed the previous best of 56 runs between Naim-ur Rahman and Khaled Mahmud against Kenya at Chennai on 23-5-1998.

Minhajul Abedin's 68* was his maiden score of fifty-plus in his 25th LOI match. His previous highest was 45 against Kenya at Chennai on 23-5-1998.

His score was also the highest individual score in the WC for Bangladesh. The previous highest was 64 by Mehrab Hossain against West Indies at Dublin on 21-5-1999.

John Blain recorded his country's best bowling figures to date when he captured four wickets for 37 runs. The previous best figures for Scotland was Gavin Hamilton's 2-36 against Pakistan at Chester-le-Street on 20-5-1999

Iain Philip became the first Scottish fielder to hold three catches in a match. Interesting he becomes the first fielder in LOI history to do so against Bangladesh.

The 20 run partnership between Alec Davies and John Blain was Scotland's best for the eight wicket. The previous best was the unbeaten 12 between the same pair against Australia at Worcester on 16-5-1999.

Hasibul Hussain's two wickets takes his tally to 25 wickets in 23 matches. He becomes the first bowler from a non-Test playing country to reach the 25-wicket milestone. Following him is Kenya's captain Aasif Karim who now has 24 wickets in 28 matches.

Bangladesh recorded its only second win in LOIs. The first win came against Kenya at Hyderabad (Ind) on 17-5-1998, when it won by six wickets.

The Man of the match award was Minhajul Abedin's first of his career. He in fact becomes the only third Bangladeshi player to win such an award. Athar Ali Khan (v Sri Lanka at Calcutta, 31-12-1990) and Mohammad Rafiq (v Kenya at Hyderabad, India, 17-5-1998) are the only others to do so.
