Statistical Highlights 12th match: West Indies v Bangladesh at Dublin, 21-5-1999

Mohandas Menon

This match was the 1454th in Limited over international history. This equals the number of Test matches played as on date. It has taken Test cricket 122 years, while the limited-over version required just 28 years to reach this tally.

This match was the 170th in World Cup history.

This match was West Indies' 369th and Bangladesh's 32nd in LOIs.

This match was West Indies' 39th and Bangladesh's 2nd in the WC.

This was first meeting between the two sides.

WC debutant Minhajul Abedin, one of Bangladesh's most experienced player, was appearing in his 24th LOI match. He is the only surviving member of Bangladesh's first ever LOI match against Pakistan at Moratuwa on 31-3-1986 - in the Asia Cup.

The Clontarf Cricket Club at Castle Avenue a suburb Dublin in Northern Ireland was the 15th country to host a LOI match (i.e. if we take the eight Caribbean countries as one). Dublin also became the 115th city and 129th ground to host a LOI match. It also has the distinction of being one of the smallest venues for this WC (it can accomodate only 3500).

Mehrab Hossain - Bangladesh's only century maker in LOIs (101 v Zimbabwe at Dhaka on 25-3-1999) also became his country's first 50-plus scorer in the WC.

The 84 run partnership for the fifth wicket between Mehrab Hossain and Naimur Rahman was Bangladesh's best for any wicket in the WC. The previous best was 34 for the eight wicket between Naimur Rahman and Enam ul Haq in the earlier match against New Zealand at Chelmsford on 17-5-1999.

Courtney Walsh's 4-25 was his best figures in the WC. He betters the previous best of 4-40 against Pakistan at Lahore in the 1987 WC.

Walsh's figures are also the best against Bangladesh in a WC match. The previous best was jointly held by Kiwis Gavin Larsen and Chris Cairns at Chelmsford on 17-5-99. They both had figures of 3-19.

Walsh now takes his wicket tally in the WC to 23 in 14 matches. He is just three short of Andy Roberts' 26 wickets in 16 matches - the most by a West Indian bowler in the WC.

The 25 wides conceded by West Indies was the second highest in a WC match by a team after the 33 conceded by Scotland against Pakistan at Chester-le-Street on 20-5-1999.

Jimmy Adam's 53* was his maiden fifty in the WC. His score was the highest against Bangladesh in a WC match. Ridley Jacobs who had scored 51 in the same innings, had earlier bettered Matthew Horne's 35 for New Zealand at Chelmsford on 17-5-1999.

The Man of the match award was Courtney Walsh's only fourth in a LOI match. He was playing in his 190th match. His last such award came in his 141st match; against England at Nottingham on 25-5-1995.
